BURO 1.5 - Screenprints & Postcard Developments

Following on from the work I had done for my BURO 1.5 submission I began to realise as the year went and especially after my contexts presentation that these ideas were much more important for my practice. I decided to develop them further and take those smaller postcards and screenprint them up on to some found substrates from abandoned buildings.

My BURO submission was all about seeing the real side to a place and presenting your city the way you see it, not allowing other people to dictate the way your city is represented. It also linked to the idea of holidays and travel as I saw this as an extension to the idea that some people "travel" but never really see a place beyond the postcard image.

I then decided to take these original screenprints a little further and collected some bits of paper and other found objects from an abandoned factory in Manchester to represent the physicality and reality of the place even further. The substrate then becomes much more than just something that holds the image but part of the narrative of that image itself. The grime, imperfections and details shown in the image are brought into reality and begin to cross converse with each other.

I also decided to use the original orange bands from my design (BURO 1.5 was only printed in black) to add a design feature which both made the image more striking and added an intensity and focal point highlighting certain areas of texture and detail too.
