Well, here it finally is!!
After working on my Tokyo Zine and making something with that real tactile and hand made quality I wanted to look at making something a little more slick and polished which had it's own qualities and narrative. I wanted to play with the idea of creating a slick piece of graphics which pulled together rough bits of ephemera, unpredictable and harsh urban landscapes, choppy editing and fragments of text to create the story of my work and my ideas.
I wanted this piece to represent my thoughts and my process through it's presentation and content. I wanted to experiment with a range of editing techniques also which explored the idea of details, fragments and missing information lay waiting for us within the city. I tried to be quite spontaneous with the production of this piece, pulling together work, images and text I had created and using my initiative to create something that I felt as a piece represented what my work was about and it's message, but that like my work it is quite subjective and open to interpretation just as the city itself should be.
I also feel the process of making a publication has been a steep learning curve in relation to layouts, bleed and alignment and that experience has also been useful. It is also good to see my work in print and together in this way instead of just in a sketchbook or on screen.
I really wanted the images to do much of the talking for this publication, using simple editing techniques, cuts, lines and pushing images off the page along with excerpts from my blog and context writing to be quite ambiguous and fragmented. Also how this can be read and interpreted in a number of different ways, text, layout and imagery interacting to create something that for me is quite direct in relation to my themes but to others can be quite open.
At the beginning of practice 2 I was more focused on producing a portfolio but decided to concentrate on my practice and allow that to develop naturally, I feel this is a result of that and has allowed me to explore my practice but also come up with something portfolio like but also quite unique and true to me.
