Propaganda Exploration Poster

I decided to bring together some of the logo work with the photography I had been doing and my wider ideas to create a poster which I felt represented the stage of development my practice was at. I experimented with both screenprinting and the Risograph to get a sense of how this may effect the image.

I wanted to create something here which was quite a striking and eye catching image which has elements of propaganda to it, but at the same time something that was in fact quite ambiguous and with the ability to be read in many ways.

I wanted also to play with the texture of the images and create something quite rough looking and broken down. I wanted to look at representing the texture and condition of these places, but also the breaking down of the culture and age in which these places still exist, crumbling remnants of a by-gone era.

I like the idea that the main focal point for the image is a set of steps. For me I know where they are, but for most they could be anywhere, and that is the point because these steps are an important part of Manchester most walk over without even realising everyday. Steps that represent a journey, discovery and exploration, where they lead to is hidden.

I also tried to create a piece with a historical feel to it, with a nostalgia air about it which appears to be almost a surviving artifact from the era the subject matter in fact depicts. That this could have almost been found deep below Manchester in the very tunnels the image is from and allows some of that atmosphere to be captured within this poster.

I used both Screenprinting and Riso for these posters as I wanted to use quite primitive techniques and use the lower image quality as part of my piece. I also liked the connection to screenprinting and poster making in the past and the idea that this medium adds that historical context.

The imperfections in both printing techniques adds to both the texture and ambiguity I was trying to create within these posters. They don't quite line up for example and to me that makes these feel much more honest and real and less sterile and generic which is what as a designer, urban explorer and traveller I am searching to find and represent.
