No Fly Posters - Printing On Found Objects

The work I did a little earlier on for a submission to the "No Fly Posters" project in Ancoats (http://www.nichilditch-short.co.uk/2014/06/no-fly-posters-project-in-ancoats.html) has over the time since then become an important part of my practice and ideas. I decided to take it a step further and to give it some additional context by printing this onto found objects such as glass and old paper. 




Many of the work I have done throughout practice 2 has begun life as a competition or a call up for work and has been a catalyst for a new perspective on my work and has then moved on from that point to become an important piece of work for my practice. I have found these to be important as sources of alternative inspiration and also valuable for the development of my portfolio. 

As part of the development of the "No Fly Posters" project I had initially taken these designs and prints back out into the city to comment on the idea of street signs, control and sanctioned messages which can be found in my post here (http://www.nichilditch-short.co.uk/2014/06/hijacking-billboards-fly-posting.html)

But after this I felt there was also more left and wanted to now turn my attention to how I could keep the effectiveness of the prints in the urban environments whilst bringing them back into the studio as objects for assessment and display. 

I began to realise these pieces were much more than just about commenting on the signs themselves but the use of the city and the traces left by that use. The font and style reflecting the industrial past of Manchester and connecting to the lives of these buildings and the people who used them. But also the places themselves leaving an impression upon itself, using objects that were part of the fabric of these factories to hold the print and to give it much more depth of meaning, adding to the feeling of these being rediscovered relics. 

I feel these complete the intention of the original design in a way I failed to achieve in the piece I submitted and maybe teaches me the value of not rushing into labeling a project finished. These really capture the aesthetic and atmosphere of the abandoned building and create an intrigue  Playing with something so familiar and yet somehow with an added strangeness and narrative to it the influencing subjects would have never produced and allows the viewer to re-engage with the history of these spaces they walk past everyday. 

I like that these, especially the glass piece  could almost be unaltered pieces of the building itself apart from the modernness of the subject matter of the writing. That they present an unexpected version of both the city and the language of the urban environment. 

This set of prints for me feels like a real development in both my ideas and their execution and is something I am extremely pleased with.
